In order to obtain a CLP (Commercial Learners Permit) which is the first step to getting a CDL, which you will need to operate any commercial vehicle, you will first have to take and pass the General Knowledge test. The general knowledge test consists of 50 multiple choice questions, and a score of 80% (40 out of 50) or better is required to pass.
You will have one hour to complete the General Knowledge test, and will be allowed to miss only 10 questions before you have to start the process over again. If you fail you will not be able to retake the test on the same day, so you will have to make another trip.
These questions are all covered by the 2025 Tennessee CDL drivers’ manual, but it can be confusing and there is a lot of information in the book.
